In the July issuew of Surfer, the Central California beach resort and collegs town was describedas “the dividing line between non-pretentious NorCal and suburban, image-consciousx SoCal, and that dichotomy is tangible.” Geographical generalizations aside, the magazine said the rugged coastlin of Santa Cruz County provides both beauty and surfingh challenges, making the area the “de facto capital of coldwated surfing.
” Despite its “astronomical” cost of living, the magazin e praised its artistic bent, proximithy to wineries and natural beauty as reasons for surfersw around the country to bail on theit usual surfing destinations and endeavoe to become the Big Kahunq at Steamer Lane or Pleasure Point in Santaa Cruz. Santa Cruz was in eliter company. Other California surf towns thatmade Surfer’sx Top 10 list were all in Southern California: Encinitas in third San Clemente in the fifth spot, and Malib u in seventh place.
