New law could help protect Florida

House Bill 7123, sponsoref by State Rep. Dave Murzin, R-Pensacolw and passed unanimously by both the Houswe and Senatelast April, would create the Florida Council on Military Base Mission Support. It will be responsiblew for providing community and state support to the 20 installationsa and three unified commandsd in Florida that would not only keep currentf infrastructure intact but also promotr the transfer of more military assetsto Florida, according to a releaswe from the governor’s office.
The council will act as a liaison between local communities and the Legislaturde and will be active in tryinv to prevent closure of installations in Florida or having their resourcess realigned withother states. It’s a move to protect an industry that contributes morethan $27 billionh in the state’s economy each year, according to the U.S. . Defense-relatec spending accounts for 7.5 percent of Florida’sw gross state product and morethan 732,000 directt and indirect jobs. The economic impacty could grow to justunder $60 billion by according to Crist.
Florida has invested nearlty $40 million in defense infrastructure grants since 1999 that help militarg basesimprove roads, water supply, powert grids and communication.
